Hampshire’s Focus on Health Safety & Environment
HHSEG is a member of Safety Groups UK (SGUK) and is a not for profit organisation based in South East Hampshire but with a diversity of members from across the area. The group provides an informal monthly networking facility with up to date information, knowledge, and expertise along with practical advice across the full health and safety spectrum, including mental health, environmental and welfare issues. As well as acting as a network for health and safety specialists, our role is also to support and educate non-specialists who have health and safety responsibilities as part of their wider remits, such as directors, general managers, HR managers, contractors, and suppliers. In this way, HHSEG and SGUK groups contribute to the cause of reducing the toll of deaths, injuries, and illnesses due to work activities.
HHSEG’s mission is to be recognised as the focal point for high quality, low cost mutual assistance, education and training in health, safety and environmental protection for local businesses and their health, safety & environmental representatives.
HHSEG’s objectives are:
1.To maintain a high focus on health and safety and environmental matters;
2. To promote a positive health and safety and environmental culture;
3. To foster co-operation and co-ordination between all levels of workforce;
4. To promote continuing professional development in health and safety and environmental matters and to share learning experiences.
A past President described the Group’s strength as its structured informality which provides painless opportunities for members faced with new challenges perhaps in legislation or materials to reveal and remedy problems and weaknesses through discussion with fellow members or talks with visiting experts. Members gain capability, strength, security, and personal wellbeing from this partnership.

The Group was established in 1963 as “The East Hants Health and Safety Group” at the instigation of the Portsmouth Factory Inspector in conjunction with local and regional organisations and businesses. The name of the group was changed in 1997 to The Hampshire Health Safety and Environmental Group (HHSEG) in order to better reflect the geographical placing of the member companies and include environment into the title given the increasing importance of its protection in the workplace.
Biennially, in October HHSEG holds a one day conference which attracts speakers eminent in the field of health, safety, and the environment. A feature of the conference is the safety awards for innovative contributions to improving health, safety and environment protection within member organisations, schools and further education colleges and youth organisations.
The Solent Safety Award is awarded to entries from member companies or individual group members.
The Jack Bennett Trophy is for entries from Secondary Schools, 6th Form Colleges and Colleges of Further Education, Apprentice Training Schemes and Youth Organisations with members aged 10 and over.
The Grant McMillan Trophy is awarded to entries from Infant, Junior, and Primary Schools and Youth Organisations with members in the 7 to 11 year age group.
